Tantalum capacitors offer greater capacitance in a more compact form factor, along with superior temperature and DC bias characteristics compared with ceramic chip capacitors.
In addition, conductive polymer is used at the cathode for greater conductivity than conventional manganese dioxide, resulting in significantly lower ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance).

Our TS20L series is LOW ESR Chip Tantalum Capacitor. This type of capacitor is with 6 different sizes ( S case, A case, B Case, C case, D case, E Case ).

Data shows that more and more people start using multi-layer ceramic capacitors/MLCC, and increasingly optimistic about their new circuit design applications. In the past five to ten years, MLCC and tantalum capacitor capacitance of unit volume has been increased 10 to 100 times as before, MLCC application areas have gradually expanded to previously dominated by the tantalum capacitor site. Currently, MLCC and tantalum capacitors is competing between 1.0 to 100uF market. Many circuit design found that the new generation of large capacitance MLCC can better meet their needs, and higher production level (currently producing about 600 billion, and tantalum capacitors for 25 billion). Moreover, manufacturers of basic metal electrode and technological improvements have greatly reduced the cost of MLCC, which also increased victory chips for MLCC occupation tantalum capacitor market.

And at present ceramics are most cost affective in small sizes. Very large ceramics are a bit of a challenge, especially in SMD.

With the trend of portable electronic products, chip product demand gradually increase, Tantalum is no exception. It is learned that the traditional lead tantalum capacitor market demand has decreased year by year, chip tantalum capacitor market demand will increase year by year. Dealers said that despite the high prices of tantalum capacitors because of the market share in the capacitance ceramic capacitors and aluminum eroded, but also the development of its own saved for the long-term stability of the environment, which cater to the development trend of electronic products, chip on their products dominated by reversing the very most of the market.

It is learned that global chip tantalum electrolytic capacitors of the chip rate has been 71% in 1995, the current development of the chip rate was over 90%. Its greatest application in the field of mobile phones, accounting for about 36.2%, use increased from 5 to 20pcs on each cell phone. Another AV audio-visual products and notebook computer is an important application areas of chip tantalum capacitor, which accounted for 32% and 15.1%.

The industry has said that prices of tantalum capacitors is the major issues of restricting its market share, it is understood that the greatest threat to its current MLCC, the market reflects that, at present, MLCC and tantalum capacitors is between 1.0 to 100uF market competition. However, tantalum capacitors inherent performance advantages or other products can not be replaced, in some key areas of high demand, circuit designers will take tantalum capacitor as the first choice.

Reporters on the spot market from understanding the situation, because of higher prices tantalum capacitors, ceramic capacitors than aluminum capacitors and small market share. According to the dealers, in recent years, tantalum capacitor lost 10% of the market share, of which 6% of the ceramic capacitor occupies 3% of the aluminum capacitor possession, other devices accounted for 1%. The low leakage and high capacity of tantalum capacitors favors their use in sample and hold circuits to achieve long hold duration, and some long duration timing circuits where precise timing is not critical. They are also often used for power supply rail decoupling in parallel with film or ceramic capacitors with low ESR and reactance at high frequency. Tantalum capacitors can replace aluminum electrolytic capacitors in situations where the external environment or dense component packing results in a sustained hot internal environment and where high reliability is important. Equipment such as medical electronics and space equipment that require high quality and reliability make use of tantalum capacitors.

Low-voltage tantalum capacitors are commonly used in large numbers for power supply filtering on computer motherboards and in peripherals due to their small size and long-term reliability.

When applying tantalum capacitors, the possibility of thermal runaway (see above) or spontaneous short-circuiting is usually considered. In many cases, a failed capacitor will cause termination of normal circuit operation, but no other ill effects. However, if sufficient power is available, catastrophic thermal runaway may cause a fire or small explosion. If this situation is a possibility, external current limiting (e.g. thermal fuse, circuit breaker) is often used to prevent catastrophic failure.

Of much less concern, yet still important, especially in audio applications, is the micro phonic or piezoelectric effect. Barium titinate which is the base ceramic material for most dielectric systems will exhibit microphonic effects. It is not very difficult to take a Y5V capacitor and put a DC bias with a small signal 1kHz sine wave and get the capacitor to “sing”. Tantalum capacitors exhibit no microphonic effects. The experiment done by AVX involved the opposite phenomena whereby the part was shaken while under bias and the resulting generated voltage was measured. This was done for a series of 1µF devices and the results are shown in Fig below.
